Read the following article and answer the questions below in the comments section.Arab traders began to settle among the Africans of the coast, resulting in the emergence of a people and culture known as Swahili. In the second half of the 18th century, the slave trade expanded and became more organised. There was also a huge demand for ivory, and slaves were used as porters to carry it.

There were three main reasons why more slaves were required:
1. The clove plantations on Zanzibar and Pemba set up by Sultan Seyyid Said, needed labour.
2. Brazilian traders were finding it difficult to operate in West Africa because the British navy was intercepting slave ships. The Brazilians made the journey round the Cape of Good Hope, taking slaves from the Zambezi valley and Mozambique.
3. The French had started up sugar and coffee plantations in Mauritius and Reunion.
A number of different people - Arabs and Africans - were involved in supplying slaves from the interior, as well as transporting ivory. They included:
- The prazeros, descendants of Portuguese and Africans, operating along the Zambezi
- The Yao working North East of the Zambezi
- The Makua operating East of the Yao, closer to the coast
- The Nyamwezi (or Yeke) operating further north around Lake Tanganyika under the leadership of Msiri and Mirambo, who established a trading and raiding state in the 1850s which linked up with the Ovimbundu in what is now modern Angola
The most famous trader of all was Tippu Tip, (Hamed bin Mohammed) a Swahili Arab son of a trader, and grandson of an African slave. He was born in Zanzibar of African Arab parentage and went on to establish a base West of Lake Tanganyika, linking up with Msiri. He and his men operated in an area stretching over a thousand miles from inland to the coast.

ResponderEliminarNo i do not, they could have sued their own people or at least payed the people that worked for them instead of enslaving them into a lifetime of servitude
Imagine you are taken as a slave. Where would you prefer to go?
I would prefer to go and work the plantations than be sold for something else. That would be my preferance
by the way that was sammy Mohney ^^^
ResponderEliminarNo, they still should have had a payment a be able to live a normal life. If I was taken as a slave, I would like to go to the sugar factories in France. =D

I understand no one wants to do the work so they take slaves to do it. But that is wrong. People shouldn’t be so lazy. Some people want to leave their country to go somewhere like the Americas. So people allow them to but they would have to work for a certain amount of years before they are free. I wouldn’t want to be a slave.
ResponderEliminar~Ashley
I do not agree to such reasons, since people should be paid for their work, and also to choose their work, etc. Also the freedom to go as they please.
ResponderEliminarIf I were taken as a slave, I probably would want to work on a plantation.

no, i don't think any reason is good enough to destroy a person's life and force them into slavery.
ResponderEliminari would want to be on the clove plantations because then all they would do was work and atleast i wouldn't have to be moving from place to place all the time.

There is no reason for anyone to have a slave, you could pay them or if you don't have money, give them a portion of what they are farming. If i absolutely had to be a slave I might choose to work on a plantation, it would be extremely hard work and it would be difficult for anyone, physically and mentaly hard.

ResponderEliminarI think that it was not completely necessary for slaves to be needed. Workers were used to do these jobs before slaves and though it might cost more it is the right thing to do

i dont think that there is any "reason" that one person should take another person and make that person do work for no pay while you are beating them. i would prefer to stay were i am than be forced into slavery.

Devan: Your answer on going to France to work in a sugar factory. Very different from everyone elses, I must say.
ResponderEliminarJavier: You never answered the questions of where would you want to go if you were a slave.
Joanna: I liked how you backed up your answer on why you'd want to work on a plantation.

i agree with Ashley...People should learn to do work and it is not their right to enslave another person.
ResponderEliminarJavier...what were some of the other reasons to have a slave..you said not completely neccasary.
i have a question for everyone...what i don't get is that a slave could buy their freedom, but slave weren't paid,so how could you buy your freedom, there is a flaw in the "system" and it is unfair and not right.
-Roya
Roya: yeah, i guess i've never thought about that before. they pretty much just wanted to make it impossible to do it...they succeeded.
ResponderEliminarJharid and Ashley: where would you go if you absolutely had to be a slave? (these are all hypothetical situations so just go along with it)
Everyone: i agree with everyone that you should pay the people that work for you and that slavery is never right.
-joanna
I still don't agree that slaves are needed. even though it was for the country or whatever the people could have at least been paid for their work.If you really needed help with the labors they could have been paid for whatthey helping to do. If I were taken as a slave i'd like to go to some place warm and tropical... I'm not sure exactly where but yea... Sorry this is late but it was e-mailed to Mrs.Velez when we did them and I just got internet back last night
ResponderEliminarRoya- I agree with your comment about the flaw in the system but I belive that the system could have possibly been made that way so that there was really no escape for the slaves.
ResponderEliminarJavier- I agree that paying people for their work is the best possible idea for something getting done.
Lauren- I wish That you would have elaborated just a wee bit more... so we could really know your full opinion
ResponderEliminarAnd the one above this is Mine too
