Farm journal reports on the care and feeding of slaves, 1836

Read this article, summarize it in one or two paragraph and then answer the following questions:
1. What does this account tell us about slave life? what does it tell us about the status of slaves on plantations?

2. How might this account have been used by abolitionists? By pro-slavery factions?

  1. 1.
this tells us about how boring and rebulated the life of a slve was. the status of a slave on a plantation is somewhat like an animal or livestock.

the abolitionists could have said that they should be treated like humans and not like animals...getting washed and fed every sunday.
they could agrgue that they feed them well and they give them time to cleen them selfs up

  2. 1. on sundays it is as bad for them. they are taken care of pretty well. The owner gives his slves good clothes and makes sure of it. they re given one thing of each and are responsible for taking care of it.

    2. well it is unfair tht they recive one of everything and dont recieve anymore thn thta. also they only get a liltle bit of food and nirther hve the time to cook it or the right utensils for it. they cnan argue that on sundya they get fed well and wshed.

  3. They work hard all day and they have to make their own food but they have very little time to do so and they dont have the materials they need to cook...so on most days the go to bed tired, hungry and dirty. then they go threw the same thin every day for the rest of their lifes.

The only day of the week that the can clean themselfs is sunday. the master gives them one hour on sunday to eat and get washed up. but the slaves also have to clean their houses. so this gives very little time to eat and wash themself.

  4. This story seems like a basic documentary of how most slaves were treated during those times. it tells us what they had to go through on a regular basis

  6. I feel this article is really good, because it brings to light how harsh it was for a slave to even get a decent bath or something to eat. This shows that life for a slave was really tough, not just with the farm work or anything, but with common things that many people take for granted. If they had a tough time just getting food, then it really shows how tough slave life must have been

  7. This article seems a little bland almost as if it was a documentary. This also knows what they are talking about, but without the presence of experience.

  8. I think that's it's sad how their conditions were during slave times. It was probably metally tiring to the slaves that they went throught this daily

  10. i agree with Devan, i wish it had a little more of the emotional factor in with it. what are the slaves feeling? have they thought about running away and taking their freedom? how are they experiencing the harsh conditions? but it is a really good detailed report of what the life of a slave is really like.
