A slave girl tells of her life, 1861

Read the article, summarize it in one of two paragraphs and then answer the questions.
1. Like Henry Watson's account of slave auctions, Harriet Jacobs' narrative was probably edited extensively by white abolitionists. Does this diminish its impact? Is all history somehow edited from the actual narrative?

2. Accounts of abuse within slavery are spread across time and location, from colonial America to the Civil War.

3. How does Harriet's account of sexual exploitation affect your view of slavery?

4. Why do you think women, by large, have received less attention than men in the tale of slavery?

  1. 1. The story told was very hard to read, i don't know if the abolitionists added to make it seem worse or if they deleted, but either way the story was still very tough to read. most history is different from the actual narrative, history is writen by certain people and there is usually some bias to it.

    2. Slavery was not only hard because of the physical labor and mental strain of being seperated, but for many women, being raped was an extremely unfortunate occurance. i think that the aspect of rape within slavery, just adds to the amount of disgust i think of when i think of slavery.

    3. women in slavery may have been less looked at when it comes to narratives and attention, because back then women weren't equal and if you were a female slave then you definately had even less importance according to people during that time.

It does seem like most of the emotions were taken out, the deep sense of desparation. All history is biased (well, it's hard to give a fully acurate account) because everyone sees it differently. everyone experiences life in a different way so how can we tell that story without putting a bit of ourselves in it?

    3. Accounts of abuse within slavery are spread across time and location, from colonial America to the Civil War. How does Harriet's account of sexual exploitation affect your view of slavery?
I had no idea that sexual abuse was so prominent in the system of white slave owners. it's terrible to think that they thought of their slaves as less than people, yet they didn't mind having sex with them. it seems like it's contradicting itself. however this made them more vulnerable and easier prey for the nasty white slave owners.

    4. Why do you think women, by large, have received less attention than men in the tale of slavery?
i think it is because at this time women still did not have full rights like any other male did, and unconsciously or not they were sort of slipped to the side lines. the men did most of the work on the fields and had the "hardest conditions". which in some cases they did, but in this story the emotional pain would be harder to deal with because it is the ever present unknown. (whether or not he will molest you today, who can you trust, will he hurt you if you tell?)

  3. (realized i didn't give my opinion for number 3)

    3. it made me think of slavery with more disgust than ever. these slave owners were twisted people who only wanted to glorify themselves, and get what they wanted. this is just as bad as the physical abuse that was performed on the slaves.

  4. This story i feel impatced me very much. I cannot imagine what the women on plantations must have gone through. Besides the physical abuse i cringe at the thought of the mental abuse. Woman i feel almost had the toughest time of all in slavery. They had to work, were whipped many times, and were sexually assaulted repeatedly. This story really opens your eyes.

  6. I think that this story tells about the truth of slavery and all the hardships that slaves had to face on a regular basis. It must have been really hard for a slave to have to go through this everyday and work hard.

  8. This story just like most stories is and sad and moving story. Women probably had one of the worst times in slaves times. they had to carry children take care of the children and resist being sexually and mentally abused by their salve masters- Whitney Burney

  9. Summary:
IN this story, Harriet Jacobs is a young girl of 15 working for a wealthy white slave owner, Dr. Flint. She tells us that as she grew up and matured, he started to harass her and stalked her. She accounts that wherever she went he would follow, and he would whisper vulgar things into her ear. He tried to make her submit to him. He was also extremely older than her an she was just a young girl. this brought anger and jealousy to the mistress of the house, and Harriet became despised by from her owners. She was unable to tell her grandmother, for fear that her grandma would have violent fits of anger towards Dr. FLint and get Harriet in trouble. She was also unable to tell anyone because the Dr. promised that he would kill her. with no one to turn to and no prospects for a better future, her world was one of hopelessness and emotional/physical pain. she would see two children playing together (Ia white and a black child) and she would turn arround in sorrow, for she knew that, that one day the black girl would soon become the slave to the white child. Many slaves underwent such hurendous mental torture and had to live through it everday of their life.

  10. It sounds painful to deal with the emotional stress of knowing that you have no where to go to get help and that you will be stuck as a slave for the rest of your life. Not to mention having to be abused.
